Chongqing Downtown Temple

Right in the heart of Chongqing, Luohan Temple is a spiritual escape in between skyscrapers. Infused with rich Chongqing history. Originally built during the Northern Song Dynasty (1064-1067) and once known as Zhiping Temple, this sacred site was renamed Luohan Temple after its reconstruction in 1885 by Master Longfa, who added the renowned clay sculptures of 500 Arhats. Though damaged during World War II, the temple has been perfectly restored as it blends ancient architecture and urban surroundings. This striking contrast, make it a unique stop among Chongqing temples. Known as the “supernatural temple for wealth-seekers,” it continues to draw visitors eager to experience its spiritual allure and architectural splendor.

One of the temple’s highlights is the 20-meter-long ancient Buddha rock, adorned with over 400 Song Dynasty stone carvings. These carvings and the temple’s peaceful courtyards have become iconic spots for photography, where ancient craftsmanship meets Chongqing’s modern skyline. For just 20 yuan, visitors can explore this cultural gem while receiving three complimentary incense sticks for prayer. With its tranquil atmosphere and profound sense of history, Luohan Temple is undeniably one of the essential places to visit in Chongqing, offering both spiritual solace and a deeper connection to the city’s heritage.
