A journey through Taoist tradition

Hidden in Nanshan or “South Mountain”, Laojun Cave is one of the most remarkable places to visit in Chongqing for anyone interested in culture and spiritual attractions. This Taoist temple, with over 1,300 years of history, is a spiritual place for locals who come not just to admire its scenic beauty but also to engage in rituals tied to health, career, education, and relationships. Early mornings are especially lively, with residents climbing the trails for exercise while others seek solace and blessings within the temple’s sacred halls. Access to the temple grounds is free, but visitors are reminded to respect the customs and etiquette associated with this revered space.

Your journey begins at the West Gate, where a 10-minute hike leads to signs pointing toward the iconic Sanqing Hall. Along the way, you’ll encounter Xuánwǔ Hall and a striking Ming Dynasty stone carving inscribed with “精气神” (Essence, Energy, Spirit). At Sanqing Hall, visitors can light incense, offer prayers, or have fortunes interpreted for a small fee. Continue uphill to the Cihang Hall, a popular spot for those seeking romantic blessings, or explore nearby attractions like the Caishen Hall and Nantian Gate. Whether it’s the temple’s historical architecture or serene mountain views, Laojun Cave offers a meaningful way to experience Chongqing history and spiritual culture.
