Jingangbei Ancient Village (金刚碑老村)
Jingangbei Ancient Village is a bit outside of Chongqing Downtown but worth to visit for anyone who likes nature and culture.
This old village is just on the banks of a river, in the middle of the forest. If you miss some greenery while travelling in Chongqing so far, Jingangbei is a nice place to give your eyes some rest and your lungs some peace.
There is not much to do for more than half a day, making it a perfect relaxed one-day trip place to visit in Chongqing. No rush to go out at 6 in the morning, head there at 10, spend 4-5 hours there walking around, having a tea, watching the architecture, small town museum and the birds and bees.
There is not western food available, but easy Chinese food made from the villagers. Noodle bowls with fresh ingredients. So give your stomach something to relax as well. We read that there are also Hot Springs, but they were closed when we visited in 2023.
Jingangbei Ancient Village, also called Jingangbei Hot Spring Old Village, is located at the base of Jinyun Mountain near the Jialing River in Chongqing’s Beibei District. About 5 kilometers from Beibei’s center, the village is known for its peaceful surroundings, historic pathways, and traditional buildings.
Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, Jingangbei grew as a hub for coal transportation. Its position along the Jialing River made it an essential route for moving coal and other goods to larger cities. Over time, as transportation advanced, the village’s role diminished, leading to its decline and partial abandonment.
Recent preservation efforts have turned the village into a historical and cultural site. Visitors can explore its stone walkways, admire its historic structures, and visit natural hot springs from the Wentang Gorge, which share their source with the nearby North Hot Spring. These springs provide a relaxing stop for those exploring the area.
The village offers opportunities for activities like tea sampling and visiting shops. Its blend of nature and history creates a picturesque experience. Dense foliage and old buildings make it a unique spot to walk through and appreciate.
Jingangbei Ancient Village combines cultural heritage with natural attractions, making it a worthwhile destination in Chongqing.
