Hongya Cave can be reached via a short walk from Xiao Shen Zi Station of line 6 and 1. We recommend to take the metro, as driving a car to central Chongqing is madness.

Hongya Cave (洪崖洞民俗风貌区)
Hongya Cave or Hongya Dong is easily one of the, if not the larges tourist attraction in Chongqing. If you are planning a trip to Chongqing China, you need to take the obligatory picture from Hongya Cave, taken from the other side. The layered building just looks out of this world. Especially at night.
Going through the building is also an experience, however we are 50/50 about if we would recommend going inside. If you been to China for a bit or will travel even further, skip this food and tourist attraction in Chongqing. The food and snacks offered are the same as in most other food courts or street food street in Chongqing or nearby cities. Minus thousands of other tourist. It is simply a very crowded place in Chongqing.
But! Do have a look at it from nearby, Hongyadong really looks amazing.
Hongya Cave, in Chongqing’s Yuzhong District by the Jialing River, is a well-known cultural and entertainment destination. It features traditional stilt house architecture, called diaojiaolou, reflecting the city’s architectural past. Its history spans over 2,300 years, evolving from an ancient Ba State military fortress to a commercial hub in later dynasties.
The current Hongya Cave, opened in 2006, is an 11-story complex built into a hillside. It includes a mix of shops, eateries, and entertainment spots. On the fourth floor, visitors can explore a food market offering local treats like spicy mala dishes.
One of the main attractions is the viewing platform on the top floor, which offers wide views of the Jialing River and Chongqing’s urban landscape. At night, the lit-up structure is a major draw, often compared to scenes from the animated film Spirited Away.
